Has anyone seen any movies that were nominated for Academy Awards this past year?
I know what you’re thinking already: “John, those awards shows are extremely politically motivated and besides, real people don’t vote for them, Hollywood executives decided who gets what award.” That may be true, but does that make it right? Point in case: ‘There Will Be Blood’. Horrible movie. Daniel Day Lewis put forth some great acting in an otherwise boring and uneventful movie. Somehow this movie got all kinds of accolades, award nominations, etc. I can think of several movies that share this. Hollywood tells us what is popular (what we should like) and the case is closed.
For what it’s worth I think the NBA works in much the same way. Consider first of all the MVP. This year it’s Kobe Bryant. Does anyone remember what was happening with him less than one year ago? This prima donna was demanding to be traded. Sure he had a pretty good season, helped himself to a lot of points, but was he the best of the best? I think not. There are a number of players you could point out, my choice would be Chris Paul. If you’ve been following him at all this season you’d know how stellar his play has been this season, and even though his team did get knocked out of the playoffs, I still believe that MVP trophy should be on his shelf.
Let’s switch to the NBA All-Star selection for a second. I know that the fans basically pick the players, and therein lies my issue. The fans could not have been more wrong this year. Miami Heat, at the time the worst record in the NBA, stinking on ice, and somehow D.Wade ends up an Eastern Conference starter. On my list of things that don’t make sense, this one is right up there with global warming. Can the NBA not at least fake the results of the balloting to save themselves some embarrassment? (and if any of you think they’re above doing that, I’ve got news for you)
This must end here, otherwise we go on to the NFL, NCAA football, it would go forever. Go Cubs.
